Sexual Assault Awareness Events Planned for April 27th at Shasta College
Denim Day Celebration and Take Back the Night

(Redding, CA) — In 1999, the Italian High Court overturned a previous high-profile sexual assault conviction because they believed that by assisting in removing her tight jeans during a physical attack, the rape victim had consented to the assault. The following day, men and women alike throughout the courthouse and community wore denim jeans in protest of this misunderstanding of consent and against destructive attitudes about sexual violence.

One SAFE Place has partnered with Shasta College and the Shasta County DA’s Office to bring Denim Day to the Redding area. Join us on Wednesday, April 27th from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM for this event, taking place in the quad area of the main Shasta College campus, just outside the Student Center. This event will include informational resource booths and interactive awareness activities to engage everyone in sexual violence prevention.

“One SAFE Place is asking people throughout Shasta County to stand together against sexual violence by wearing your denim on this one day! Together, we can create One SAFE Place and One Safe Community,” said Jean King, Executive Director for One SAFE Place.

On the same date, April 27th, One SAFE Place will host their annual “Take Back the Night” celebration, also in the quad area of the main Shasta College campus, just outside the Student Center, from 7:00 to 9:00 PM. This event-characterized by survivor speakers from the VOICES at One SAFE Place Survivor Advocacy Committee, local resources, a candle-lit awareness march, and more.  The evening will shed light on the problem of sexual assault from the local level and provide a platform for our community to come together in solidarity for all those victimized by sexual abuses.
