9th Annual Walk-a-Mile in Her Shoes® is Tomorrow

(Redding, CA)  On Saturday, May 14, 2016 at the South end of the Market Street Promenade, One SAFE Place will host the 9th Annual Walk a Mile in Her Shoes® event, the international men’s march to stop rape, sexual assault and gender violence. “This is a call to men to educate and engage our community about a very serious subject and to take action in preventing sexualized violence,” said Jean King, Executive Director of One SAFE Place.  Registration and activities start at 10 am and the walk will begin at 11 am.

“This is a fun and creative way for men and their families to show their support for survivors, educate their children and come together as community,” said Tyler Whitlow, OSP’s 2016 Walk a Mile in Her Shoes Event Chair.

Participants are encouraged to register at the event. The goal of this year’s event is to raise $35,000 to support One SAFE Place’s vital community services.  While geared toward men, everyone is welcomed and urged to participate.  The event is styled like a walk-a-thon where participants are encouraged to make a donation or to seek sponsors for their mile walked.  “While the majority of victims are women, men can be victims too, so our goal with this event is to bring awareness and an end to sexual assault of any kind in our community,” King added.

“The issue is hard to talk about that it’s likely that someone you know, someone you care about, has been assaulted.  Together we can make a difference,” said Whitlow.

Check-in starts at 10 a.m. tomorrow, May 14th and the one mile walk kicks off at 11 a.m. at the South end of Market Street Promenade.  Following the walk, participants (over 21) who raise $100 or more will receive a free beer from Wildcard Brewery’s Tied House on Pine St.  All participants will receive discounts on purchases from Savory Spoon, Nor Cal Vape and Angelo’s Pizza.
