Shasta County and One SAFE Place will benefit from the settlement of a suit against My Pillow Inc. for making unrealistic claims about its product.
Ten counties will share a payout of $995,000 in penalties from My Pillow for advertising claims that couldn’t be backed up by scientific evidence, according to the Shasta County District Attorney’s Office. The company said in its ads that it could mitigate the effects of fibromyalgia, migraine headaches, TMJ and restless leg syndrome.
As part of the settlement, the Shasta District Attorney’s Office negotiated a $10,000 contribution from My Pillow to One SAFE Place.
The suit was filed in Alameda County Superior Court. Other counties who were part of the suit were Alameda, Marin, Monterey, Napa, Orange, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, Solano and Sonoma.
The settlement prohibits My Pillow from making claims about how it affects health conditions without scientific research, manufacturing or selling any misbranded or falsely advertised pillows, and advertising its products as the “official” product of a nonprofit organization devoted to studying sleep conditions.
“We are committed to bringing consumer protection cases when businesses make false or misleading claims about their products,” Chief Shasta County Deputy District Attorney Stephanie Bridgett said in a prepared statement. “Our office is especially pleased that it is part of this settlement, a contribution is being made to One SAFE Place for the valuable services they provide to the community.”
