Sam Magana volunteers with OSP clients. She sent us this letter recently, because she was touched by her experience volunteering. She enjoys working with the children the most because “they are all amazingly unique little individuals.”
Sam was born in San Francisco and has a younger brother, Sean. Her mom has always been her biggest role model. Sam describes herself as a goofy kid, who always tried to make others laugh. She uses that joyful spirit in her volunteer work with One SAFE Place.
Sam graduated from UC Davis with a BS in biological science and a minor in psychology. She is studying for her MCAT with hopes of attending medical school in the future. In her free time, Sam enjoys running, hiking, and the outdoors.
Dear One SAFE Place,
When I decided to volunteer here, I had no idea what to expect. I guess I thought I would meet people who were angry due to their circumstance, that wouldn’t care to meet or interact with me. But boy was I wrong!
I met incredibly strong men and women who were making a change in their lives for the betterment of their children. I got to meet and spend lots of time with AMAZING children who are all unique and wonderful in their own ways. I got to meet staff and volunteers who are INCREDIBLY compassionate, understanding and dedicated to bringing awareness to mental and physical abuse victims.
I have learned more about myself than I can put into words. I know this isn’t likely the residents preferred place or situation to be in, but I am so FORTUNATE to have gotten to meet all of you and your WONDERFUL children. Thank you all for letting me into your lives.
